Clad in silver and black, the Sweetwater Warriors Division 1 squad opened the 2012 season with a 7-5 victory over the Tierrasanta Titans. First-year attackman, Chris Laethem pumped in the first goal of the season with a nice left-handed shot near the crease. Kyle Crews followed up shortly thereafter with a second goal, and the Warriors held the lead for the remainder of the game. Lacking in overall experience, but bolstered by great team athleticism, the scoring shots were spread amongst several Warriors players
#13 - Chris Laethem - 2 goals
#51 - Kyle Crews - 2 goals
#24 - Jake Downey - 1 goal
#32 - James Neri - 1 goal
#27 - Ollie Shirley - 1 goal
#8 - Colin Castro - 1 assist
On the defensive end of the field, the Titans efforts were continually frustrated by the quick stick work of longpole, Jake DeGroot. DeGroot was particularly effective in keeping loose balls from crossing the midline, and scooping ground balls and moving the forward. Second-year goalie, Tony Murphy, had a 10 saves in the season opener, and provided leadership and direction to his defensive crew.
Next week the Warriors will face off against Fallbrook at the home field. The D1 game will begin at 10:00, while D3 faces off at 11:30.
